The Sierra Club of Canada is disappointed that Federal Environment Minister John Baird approved the Deep Panuke gas development in offshore Nova Scotia this week without meaningful examination and mitigation of the Project’s environmental impacts.
“The Deep Panuke review by the National Energy Board (NEB) and the Canada Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB) ignored much of the evidence presented on the environmental impacts of this proposal” said Bruno Marcocchio, Sierra Club of Canada Atlantic Campaign Director. The NEB and CNSOBP, and now the Minister, have refused to acknowledge evidence of the Project’s harmful environmental impacts, such as those of mercury-based drilling muds, and that greenhouse gas emissions from the Project will be seven percent of Nova Scotia’s total current emissions.
