Mountain Pine Beetle and Watershed Hydrology
Workshop: Preliminary Results of Research from BC, Alberta and
Colorado

Date :
July 10, 2007

Location:
Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre, Kelowna, BC

FORREX, the BC Ministry of Forests and Range and the BC Branch of
the Canadian Water Resources Association are collaborating to
organize a 1 day workshop on the hydrologic effects of Mountain Pine
Beetle (MPB).
The objective of the workshop is to present
preliminary research results from ongoing projects in BC and
Alberta. Rapid communication of relevant, interim research results
is needed in order to incorporate the best available knowledge into
BCs land management response to the infestation.

Presentation topics include:

  • Overview of
the current MPB infestation and expected spread in BC

  • Impacts of MPB
on snow accumulation and melt patterns
  • Lodgepole pine
stand interception and transpiration across age classes in
    Alberta
  • MPB effects on
stand water balances in the Southern Interior of BC

  • Streamflow and
water quality changes in beetle killed catchments in
    North-Central Colorado
  • MPB-Hydrology
impacts on hydrologic processes in Central BC
  • Effects of
wildfire and salvage harvesting on hydrology, water quality,
aquatic ecology and channel processes in the Southern Interior
    of BC
  • Analysis of
long-term streamflow effects of beetle infestation and salvage
    harvesting in Central BC
  • Application of
hydrological models (UBC Watershed Model, WRENSS, HBV-EC and
DHSVM) for estimating MPB and harvesting effects on streamflow
    in BC and Alberta
  • Overview of
the BC Ministry of Environment MPB Hydrology decision support
    tool

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

 The
Upper Penticton Creek Watershed Experiment:   Results of a paired
watershed study into the effects of forest management on water
resources

Date:
July 11, 2007    Location:
Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre, Kelowna, BC

FORREX
and the BC Ministry of Forests and Range are collaborating to
organize a 1-day workshop reviewing the results of the Upper
Penticton Creek Watershed Experiment, a paired-basin study examining
the hydrologic effects of forest management.
The
objective of the workshop is to present both long-term and recent
research results that highlight the state of the knowledge on
hydrological effects of forest management in the southern interior
of BC.

 Presentation and
discussion topics will cover research on water yield, snow
accumulation and melt, rainfall interception and stand water
balances, sediment budgets, nutrient cycling and water quality,
aquatic invertebrates and modelling the effects of forest management
on streamflow.

Registration is free

(lunch included), but spaces are limited so please register early:
