Canada needs national standards on drinking water because testing and treatment regulations vary greatly across the country and Canadians are at risk of developing waterborne illness, says a new report by an environmental group.
In the report, Waterproof 2: Canada’s Drinking Water Report Card, the Sierra Legal Defence Fund says the lessons from the Walkerton, Ont., contaminated water tragedy in 2000 have not been taken to heart. Seven people in Walkerton died of E. coli poisoning after drinking unsafe water.
