Resource
Conservation Manitoba promotes the Seven Habits of Ecologically
Conscious Manitobans as part of its new on-line guide for
sustainable living: Travel car-light, Save energy and money, Buy
local, Be garbage-free, Shop smart, Choose clean living, Get
together with others.
FUNDING
SECURED. Lynda Bausinger, Elora Centre for Environmental
Excellence, obtained $20 000 from Bruce County to enhance Well
Aware activities in the area.
MOVING DAY. Peterborough Green-Up‘s new
location is environmentally-friendly, says Executive Director Sue
McGregor-Hunter. The space has been decorated with low VOC paint and
the most environmentally-friendly carpeting available. Interior
windows allow natural light penetration. As a result of the move,
staff won’t be able to access emails or telephones until 4 June. An
open-house will be held in the fall (17 September).
CANCER AND
PESTICIDES. Experts from the International Agency for Research on
Cancer, World Health
Organization and the U.S.
National Cancer Institute discuss adult and childhood exposure
to non-cosmetic pesticides at the Canadian Cancer
Society Pesticides and Cancer conference. 12-13 November.
GREEN THE

CHALLENGE. Buildings account for nearly half the
greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, and emissions are increasing
rapidly, according to the Royal
Architectural Institute of Canada. RAIC has adopted ambitious targets
for reduction in fossil fuels to construct and operate new and
renovated buildings: 60% by 2010; 80% by 2020; carbon neutral by
2030. Reforms needed to achieve targets include stronger building
codes and incentives.

ACTION. Non-profits, neighbourhood groups and
community advocates from across the country share their most
effective tools, strategies and newest models of community
engagement at the Communities
in Action conference. Organized by Guelph Civic League and
Columbia

Families, suggests turning vanishing blue-collar manufacturing
jobs into green-collar employment to poverty-proof the province. See

Eco-Action Kids Awards is a nation-wide program that recognizes
