“One Small Action, Unlimited Possibilities.”

Starbucks Canada partners with Volunteer Canada and Youth Action Grant recipients to make positive change across Canada.

Tuesday, May 8, 2012 (Toronto, ON – www.funsociety.ca) – We are pleased to announce the launch of a new community initiative, the Thriving Neighbourhoods program. Thriving Neighbourhoods will inspire our partners, our customers and Canadians to take action on greening their communities – and to participate in an ongoing discussion about how to improve Canada’s environment.

Thriving Neighbourhoods is a long-term commitment to improving local environmental and social issues. Our objective is to inspire Canadians to take action within their communities and to participate in an ongoing discussion about how to improve Canada’s environment.

Friends Uniting for Nature (FUN) Society is pleased to be working with Starbucks to provide Canadians with the tools (Thriving Neighbourhoods web site), resources (Volunteer opportunities search engine) and spaces (Starbucks stores) to make positive change in neighbourhoods across Canada.

“FUN Camps are designed to provide leadership skills to campers and to show that living sustainably within a city setting is not only possible but also a ton of fun.  We’re trying to teach kids how to recognize their own impact on the environment, while equipping them with some of the key skills they need to become effective agents of change.” – Maia Green, founder of the FUN Society and Chair of the Board.

We are also pleased to be associated with many of Canada’s most credible and effective non-profit organizations that are also involved in the program and are serving on the Thriving Neighbourhoods Advisory Council. Thriving Neighbourhood program partners include: Action Nouvelle Vie, Ashoka Youth Venture, FUN Society, Learning for a Sustainable Future, The Natural Step, TREC Education, Volunteer Canada and Youth Central.

Thriving Neighbourhoods has been divided into three themes or stages. The program kicks off this May and runs through to October, focusing on the themes of: Greening Your Community, Engaging Youth and Waste Reduction. FUN Society, Volunteer Canada and Starbucks have joined together to help mobilise youth into making positive social and environmental change within their communities, helping them to organise local greening initiatives.

From local green sweeps to in-store events held by local community organisations, the Thriving Neighbourhoods program will improve social and environmental issues across Canada. With one small action, there are unlimited possibilities.

Thriving Neighbourhoods is an ongoing initiative, not a one-off campaign; it is a commitment by Starbucks and its community partners to help Canadians improve their communities.

Founded in 2008, FUN Society is a registered youth-driven Canadian organization dedicated to teaching kids and youths about the environment.  Through unique opportunities like FUN Champs, FUN Camps and FUN Ambassadors, children from all backgrounds can engage in unique hands-on learning experiences to inspire and equip them to becoming an agent for positive changes, helping our planet to become more sustainable.

We currently operate in Victoria, Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia.  Check out our website for all the FUN details at www.funsociety.ca.
