The Yukon bison population is booming, a government survey shows.

The Yukon government set a target population limit at 500 animals, but last week 641 examples of North America’s largest land mammal were counted.

In a recent story reported in the Yukon News, biologist Thomas Jung, who has been studying the herd,  said that he doesn’t think the bison are in any trouble. “In fact the herd is doing very well,” said Jung. “It’s probably the best success story for bison reintroduction in North America, if not globally.”

Bison were once native to the Yukon region, but populations died off for unknown reasons.
