The BC Home Energy Planner tool

Understanding how a home uses energy is important information for homeowners to manage energy bills and reduce their impact on the environment. Many people rely on home energy assessments, which can be expensive, time-consuming or hard to access in remote communities.

To address that challenge the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation created the BC Home Energy Planner tool, enabling homeowners to assess their energy usage independently (and it’s FREE!). Integrated with the BC Data Catalogue and using public data, the tool provides a Home Energy Score and recommendations for heating, cooling, insulation and windows. This helps people reduce energy usage, adapt to the climate and apply for rebates.

The tool will help you learn:

  • Your home’s energy score (measured in gigajoules per year or GJ/yr)
  • What kinds of home energy upgrades will have the biggest impact for your home
  • Next steps to help you upgrade your home

The Home Energy Planner is currently in a pilot phase and being tested in select communities throughout B.C. during the summer of 2024.
