Growing Food, Jobs & Hope

The first event for Down to Earth Week 2017, Growing Food, Jobs & Hope brings one of Canada’s most recognized and renowned social entrepreneurs to Calgary.

Michael Ableman is an educator, organic farmer, author and advocate for urban agriculture. His fourth and latest book, Street Farm: Growing Food, Jobs and Hope on the Urban Frontier, is the focal point for for the evening. Michael will give a keynote presentation that outlines his experience creating urban farms in Vancouver’s east end, based on a simple idea: rehabilitation through meaningful work. Everyone in attendance will receive a copy of Street Farm, and Michael will be available for signing.

Following Michael’s presentation, a panel of Calgary’s leading sustainable food experts and community developers will discuss the opportunities and challenges at the intersection of urban food production and poverty, showcasing local initiatives that are opening doors to change. Panelists include Mark Van Engelen from Boks Farms, Paul Hughes from Grow Calgary, and Renee MacKillop from The Alex Community Food Centre. Panel discussion will be moderated by Ward 8 City Councillor, Evan Woolley.
