Non-profits could win one of five $10,000 conservation awards, and classrooms who support finalists for the awards can win $1,000 toward a school-based conservation project.
From September 19 to October 31, 2012, BC Hydro’s Community Champions Program is accepting submissions from non-profit organizations that demonstrate environmental leadership in their community. Organizations enter by creating a two-minute video to highlight a conservation-based initiative for a chance to win one of five $10,000 conservation awards.
Finalist videos will be posted on our Community Champions website for public viewing and voting between November 7 and December 7, 2012. Winners will be announced by December 14, 2012. Winners will be announced by December 14, 2012.
Program Summary
The Community Champions Program engages non-profit organizations within BC that demonstrate environmental leadership in their community. It provides these non-profit organizations a platform to highlight their initiatives that support conservation and the environment for the chance to win a $10,000 Community Champions conservation award.
The Program also engages youth via BC school classrooms on conservation projects by offering valuable lesson plans around sustainability and asking classrooms to determine which non-profit organization participating in the program they wish to support. By participating, their classroom is entered into a random draw for a chance to win a $1,000 award to use towards their own school-based conservation project.
For Non-Profit Organizations
The Community Champions Program is open to non-profit organizations within British Columbia that focus on sustainability, conservation and/or the environment.
Eligible Organization criteria:
- Must be a non-profit organization (for-profit organizations are not eligible to participate)
- Must support sustainability, conservation, or environmental issues/initiatives in B.C. in some capacity
- Must be based in British Columbia and not be politically motivated
- Must have not received a Community Champions conservation award for a period of three years prior to September 19, 2012
