(Government of Yukon – WHITEHORSE) – The Forest Management Branch is hosting a spring open house on May 26 at the Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest.
“The research forest is a valuable resource and I encourage all Yukoners to visit, enjoy the network of scenic walking trails and learn about ongoing forest research,” said Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Brad Cathers.
In recent years a number of enhancements to the research forest, including new trails, signage and benches, have made it more accessible to the public.
During the open house, staff from the Forest Management Branch will provide guided walks. Visitors may also explore the trails on their own or bring a GPS and participate in a high-tech treasure hunt. The non-motorized trails are suitable for walkers of all ages and fitness levels with trail lengths varying from 600 metres to five kilometres.
A new addition currently underway is the development of a forest-themed playground that will help make the research forest more family-friendly and increase community engagement in learning about forestry research.
The spring open house takes place on May 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest is located on the North Klondike Highway, one kilometre north of the Takhini River Bridge (view Google Map). Light snacks and refreshments will be served. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
