Food, Inc., the acclaimed documentary, reveals shocking truths about the U.S. food industry, where the food supply is controlled by a few powerful corporations. Why should this matter to Canadians?
Profit is often a higher priority to consumer health and Canada is a major importer of American goods — including food. Pesticides, factory farms, and genetically-modified/engineered food is unhealthy. Check your packaged foodstuff and canned goods… Can’t pronounce half of what’s on the label? Have a good look at the packaged chicken from a corporate supermarket chain — a little whiter, unnaturally uniform than what chicken used to look like years ago. Just bought steaks for the Summer barbecue? You may have noticed the odd gray spot on the meat even though the “best before” date is two to three days away. Think the bird flu or H1N1 virus are just flukes of nature? Think again.
Those are the small signs, if you’re paying attention.
