The UW Sustainability Project Hosts Earth Hour 2009 at the University of Waterloo

Waterloo, Ontario (March 12, 2009) – Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks stood in darkness.

On March 28th, 2009 at 8:30 pm Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights. An event will be held at the University of Waterloo to promote Earth Hour on campus and in the community. Earth Hour is a call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support for Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday; this includes the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo.

The University of Waterloo Sustainability Project (UWSP) encourages all students, faculty, and staff of the University to participate in this global event. To help promote and further this, UWSP will be collaborating with Warrior Weekends to provide a fun-filled Earth Hour weekend in the Student Life Centre at the University of Waterloo. What’s more, attendees of the “Earth Hour 2009 – University of Waterloo” event will automatically be entered into a draw to win one of many fabulous prizes donated by the local community.
