B.C. Couple Go Green Every Day For World To See

Rossland, B.C. – It is becoming more and more obvious with each passing day that climate change may be a real threat to our civilization, and with each passing day, ordinary people are doing what they can to lower their carbon footprint and give mother nature a helping hand.

Which is the case with Craig and Layla Baird, a husband and wife team from Rossland, B.C., who are committed to doing something green every single day for a year.

After organizing a successful Earth Day Celebration in Trail, B.C., the couple decided to put their efforts into making things a big greener in their lives and around their home. Beginning on April 22, 2008 they chose to go green every single day until April 22, 2009 (and every day after that).

Nearing the two-month mark, Craig and Layla Baird have done a number of things in their green initiative, including:

1. Building a solar cooker that uses the power of the sun to cook meals.
2. Using dandelions for coffee and tea.
3. Buying only organic and local food.
4. Putting in a garden outside and a small one inside as well.
5. Buying only fair trade and organic coffee and chocolate.
6. Only drying clothes outside during the summer, as well as inside during hot days to lower the temperature of the house.
7. Using containers for all take out instead of Styrofoam.
8. Limiting showers to five minutes.
9. Composting inside and outside.
10. Helping environment groups in the area.
11. Switching to a manual lawn mower.
12. Buying biodegradable pens.
13. Making our own shampoo, butter and body wash.

The couple have chosen to do this, not for money or to sell anything, but to help raise awareness about the environment and all the little things people can do to help change how they live their lives and how they affect the environment.

They hope to spread the message of their Our Green Year initiative and teach others to do the same. Already, some sites have popped up that follow the same message of Our Green Year, and hopefully the next 10 months will see even more.

So far, the couple have appeared on a Vancouver radio talk show, in a provincial newspaper, local paper, two local radio stations and on several blogs.
