Environmental Sustainability – University of Manitoba

In December 2002, the United Nations adopted 2005 to 2014 as the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

Environmental sustainability has been an important principle of the
University of Manitoba for some time.  In the early 90s, the University
made a commitment to environmental sustainability through its pledge to
the Talloires and Halifax Declarations, declarations that commit
signatory universities and colleges to advancing research on
sustainable development while also leading by example.  Around the same
time, the University undertook a recycling effort that has since been
awarded for its unique and collaborative approach.  A utilities
retrofit in the late 1990s has not only saved the University of
Manitoba millions of dollars but has also shone as a stellar example of
resource conservation and emissions reductions.   From recycling
initiatives to utilities retrofits to alternative fuels research, the
University is no stranger to environmental stewardship.  These examples
demonstrate only a handful of the initiatives that are positioning the
University of Manitoba as a sustainability leader.

The University of Manitoba plans to continue to lead by example.
By consolidating the University’s sustainable development process and
accomplishments within this site and by providing an information hub
through the University’s Sustainability Coordinator, the University is
better able to report on progress, react to requests for information,
coordinate outreach and education initiatives related to sustainability
issues and to begin to integrate environmental sustainability issues
within the operations of the University of Manitoba.

The University of Manitoba is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
