The New Brunswick Community Land Trust (NBCLT) is a member based, volunteer, non-profit organization focused on holding conservation easements that ensure that farmland and woodlots are maintained in ecologically sustainable production and available for future generations of New Brunswickers.
The New Brunswick Community Land trust was established in 1995 by a group of individuals who saw value in establishing a vehicle whereby landowners could through legal initiative, maintain the productive characteristics of their land in perpetuity.
The organizing group saw private woodlots being increasingly devastated by indiscriminate clear-cut practices that removed all merchantable wood and profoundly altered the ecological integrity of local landscapes. They were aware that many woodlot owners were interested in a mechanism that would protect their woodland from degrading management practices, but maintain it available for less aggressive (sustainable) management practices and continue to contribute economic return and maintain valuable ecological functions on the landscape.
