If you’re interested in being more green in your gift giving this year, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. You basically have two options to consider:
- Reduce your consumption by giving gifts that are more experience-based than product-based. By giving things like gift certificates to a spa, taking your best friend to a local concert, or treating your parent to a cooking class at a local college, you reduce your overall consumption of manufactured goods which can rely on non-renewable resources, excess packaging and the impact of shipping to your local store.
- If you want to give something more tangible, try to go for an environmentally friendly option. Look for gifts made from renewable resources, potted plants rather than cut flowers, gifts made by local craftspeople (which may include you if you’re so inclined), or something that helps the receiver live a greener life such as a cool solar powered charger for their phone.
- And ultimately, if you’re looking for the gift for the person who has everything, what about making a donation in their name to a charitable organization?
