1) Soil Orders of Canada – Online Teaching Tool
The objective of this teaching tool is to provide video footage of soil
identification and classification. The teaching tool consists of 10
videos that illustrate characteristics of 10 soil orders within the
Canadian System of Soil Classification. Numerous soil description and
identification techniques are demonstrated. This material provides a
valuable teaching resource for various courses in soil science,
agriculture, forestry, and natural resource management either as an
in-class or off-campus review.

2) BLCSS Train the Trainer LakeKeeper Program
BLCSS is launching our “LakeKeeper Workshops” this spring. We are
looking for individuals with a knowledge and/or background in the
following science related fields; biology, freshwater science, fisheries
and limnology. Those interested in pursuing this opportunity will be
trained and certified by qualified BCLSS board members, through our
“Train the Trainers LakeKeeper” program.
We are looking for instructors in the following regions of BC:
– Lower Mainland,
– Vancouver Island,
– Omenica Peace,
– Smithers/North Coast,
– Kootenays,
– Okanagan, and the Thompson Nicola.
Each LakeKeepers workshop will be approximately 1- 1.5 days long and
will be offered once or twice a year. These are not volunteer positions;
each certified instructor will be compensated for their time, travel and
any other related expenses.

3) New Watershed Management Publications
i) FAO Forestry Paper 150-The New Generation of Watershed Management
Programmes and Projects
On the occasion of the International Year of Mountains – 2002, FAO and
its partners undertook a large-scale assessment and global review of the
current status and future trends of integrated and participatory
watershed management. The overall objectives were to promote the
exchange and dissemination of experiences in implementing watershed
management projects in the decade from 1990 to 2000 and to identify the
vision for a new generation of watershed management programmes and
projects. This resource book represents a summary and critical analysis
of the rich discussions and vast material that emerged during the
review, as well as the review’s findings and recommendations. It
presents the state of the art in watershed management, promotes further
reflection and creative thinking and proposes new ideas and approaches
for future watershed management programmes and projects.
This publication has been written primarily for field-level watershed
management practitioners and local decision-makers involved in watershed
management at the district or municipality level. It will also be a
useful source of information for other readers such as senior officers
and consultants specialized in other areas, evaluators, policy-makers
and students of watershed management.

iv) Review of Groundwater-salmon Interactions in British Columbia
The report describes the interactions of surface and groundwater
relative to fish habitat, the importance of groundwater to salmon
survival and spawning, threats to groundwater and salmon posed by human
activities and climate change, and much-needed improvements to
groundwater measuring, management and regulation relative to fish
conservation.
