Today the federal government announced $9 million of funding over five years to protect important ecological and cultural lands in the Mackenzie Valley of the Northwest Territories (NWT) through the NWT Protected Areas Strategy (PAS). Funding has also been committed by environmental groups, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and its partners, World Wildlife Fund Canada, and Ducks Unlimited Canada; and the Government of the Northwest Territories. Together this funding will allow implementation of the PAS in the Mackenzie Valley to take place ahead of proposed industrial developments such as the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline.
