National Farmers Union

| November 22, 2006 | 1 Comment

NFU members believe that the problems facing farmers are common problems, and that farmers producing diverse products must work together to advance effective solutions. The NFU works toward the development of economic and social policies that will maintain the family farm as the primary food-producing unit in Canada.
Associate Members are a valued part of the National Farmers Union family. Associate Members are non-farmers that understand that food issues are everyone’s issues and want to help farmers build a sustainable and nutritious food system in Canada.

Okay … I’m going to put a restriction on my view that a “Fair Trade” initiative is good.
Namely, I support only a CANADIAN Fair Trade initiative — not one that is “North American”.
Why the difference. Two main reasons:
    1. My concern & focus on my own country’s farmers AND, even more importantly, food security/sustainability.
    2. Criteria for organic certification is being lowered in the U.S. – in part by the entrance of Wal-Mart & similar into the market.
A Canadian-based certification program – even though it likely would borrow heavily from ‘best practices’ of other countries – is another critical component to ensuring our own food security/sustainability.
    Cheers
