Burlington ON — Recognized for achieving one of the best environmental records among Ontario businesses and institutions, Burlington Mall has received the prestigious Platinum Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) through its Ontario Waste Minimization Awards program.
The Ontario Waste Minimization Awards is the means by which RCO measures and recognizes the “best of the best” in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector.
“Ontario Waste Minimization Awards nominees demonstrate that waste reduction can and should be a core value of operations and management practices,” said Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of RCO, a not-for-profit, membership-based organization involved in policy, education and project work around the issues of consumption, waste generation, reduction and diversion, and recycling.
“Our participants clearly understand the environmental and economic gains that can be made by reducing wastes.”
This year’s Ontario Waste Minimization Awards included six different categories focusing on reduction results, innovations and communications.
The Burlington Mall entry included waste diversion, tenant initiatives, solid waste diversion, environmental purchasing policy, certificates of approvals from waste haulers, program communications and innovative programs. The mall’s web site, signage, School Earth Day Event and the E-waste Community Event were included in the ‘program communications’ component. The Burlington Mall Rewards Program and Cleaning Products Program were entered under ‘innovative programs’.
Together these programs helped Burlington Mall achieve:
- A 220% increase, equaling 153.4 metric tonnes (MT), in recycled organics.
- A 7% increase (423.1 MT) reduction in garbage going to landfill.
- A 5% increase in the landfill diversion rate, raising this to 52.3% and exceeding the 51.7% target and the 20% to 45% industry average.
Overall this produced a 52.8 MT increase in the capture of recyclables and a 29.0 MT reduction in garbage to landfill.
“We are proud of what we were able to achieve and want to acknowledge Paul Carvalho, Operations Manager and Ian Lawson, Building Operator, as driving forces behind the success of Burlington Mall’s recycling programs,” said Kim LaRonde, Marketing Manager, Burlington Mall.
