CREST Halifax driving key transportation issues

There’s no question, transportation is a key issue in building sustainable communities. On the East Coast, that issue is being driven forward by CREST Halifax (Communities and Residents for Sustainable Transportation). The group of more than 700 Nova Scotians is pushing a transportation plan for Halifax Regional Municipality that is focused on environmental, social and economic factors. A major initiative of CREST is touting responsible uses for the CN rail line running through Halifax’s downtown. Earlier this year, the Nova Scotia government abandoned plans to pave the former rail line and create a trucking corridor. The proposed corridor would have diminished quality of life in downtown Halifax, CREST said.

CREST believes there is a need to take a longer term, more cohesive approach to building transportation infrastructure in HRM,” said the group’s president, Ray Wagner, in a release at the time. “We want this to be a world-class city that will attract residents, businesses, and visitors. To make that happen, we have to take a long term approach to transportation issues.”
On CREST Halifax’s website, you’ll find comprehensive information on transportation-related issues and links, including the Halifax Cycling Coalition and CarShare Halifax.
Another great resource available at the site is a link to a Sustainable Transportation Guide. It’s an ideal resource for any community facing the same issues as Halifax.
