The waters of Baynes Sound in British Columbia have long been known for their salmon and herring, as well as for the water birds that live along the shores. The Sound has been identified as an ecologically sensitive waterway requiring legislated protection under the Canada Shipping Act, and is currently proposed as a provincial Wildlife Management Area. At the same time, designation is underway to declare the Sound as an official Important Bird Area. Little wonder, then, that there is a strong interest in protecting its waters from pollution.
