There is no better way to support your local economy and gain control over what you actually consume.
It may seem challenging enough in the warmer months of the year, but when December arrives, eating locally can seem closer to impossible than anything else.
Luckily, the folks at Four Green Steps have put together some simple solutions to ensure great food all year around:
- Many communities have winter famers’ markets that offer seasonal produce, maple syrup and other goodies. You can find one near you by checking out eatwellguide.org.
- Winter is an excellent time to become an avid baker. There is nothing better than fresh bread, pastries and a warm oven heating up your home.
- Try to cook meals from scratch as much as possible – you can easily make your own tofu, cheese or sauces from easy-to-find ingredients.
- You can always grow smaller things in your kitchen, such as tomatoes and herbs. Not only will you be eating as locally as possible, your food will taste fresher and you’ll be saving money.
