The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has quietly approved a new genetically engineered corn — SmartStax — developed by Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences.
The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) reports, in a press release, that SmartStax seems to have “by-passed existing scientific assessment processes that have already
been judged insufficient by the 2001 Royal Society of Canada Panel”. ‘Decision Documents’ that summarize approval decisions are normally published by the food inspection agency, but there is no such summary of the decision to approve ‘SmartStax’.
