Stratford sees savings in wind power

Town council in Stratford, P.E.I., hopes to save thousands of dollars a year in energy costs by installing two wind turbines, but isn't quite ready to put up the towers.

A study by the Wind Energy Institute of Canada, commissioned by the town, shows the turbines could pay for themselves in about seven years.

P.E.I. looks to alternative forms of energy

Charlottetown, The Guardian: News | Winds of change

"They should be starting now,- David Stewart says. "We're calling for wind."

Eighty metres above Stewart's head a trio of massive blades begin to turn in a rotation that looks deceptively slow.

A minute later the air is filled with a slicing sound, like a knife going right though paper.

PEI sells wind-power bonds

Prince Edward Island's government has raised $5-million for a wind-power project at the eastern tip of the province by issuing a novel series of "energy savings bonds" to the public.

The bonds, which pay a healthy 5-per-cent annual interest rate, have been a hot seller since they were first issued late last year to help pay the costs of the 10-turbine Eastern Kings wind farm, a government project that began pumping power into the provincial grid in January.

The proposal is for the plant to be owned by farmers. It would crush oil from canola grown by Island farmers and mix it with diesel to create a fuel that could run vehicles and heat buildings.

Power utility will buy more wind energy

P.E.I.'s power utility will increase its reliance on wind energy after agreeing to buy the resource from two more wind farms.

Rinks save green by going green

P.E.I. rink managers are implementing conservation measures which are saving them big money. Rising electricity prices and a milder winter have meant some hefty costs for arenas across the Island, but many rinks are more than making that up.
