Position: Canoe Trip Leader
Type: Full Time Seasonal
Location: Temagami, ON
Salary: $6250 to $7000 (includes training, room and board)

Project Canoe is a non-profit charitable organization that uses the outdoors, including wilderness canoe trips, to create a transformative environment in which our youth develop life skills, social competencies, and resiliency, thereby fostering their own personal success. We partner with our youth by supporting them as they carry these newly developed skills and successes forward to manage the complex challenges in their lives. Our youth are between the ages of 13 and 18, and face economic, social, behavioural, emotional and/or cultural barriers in their daily lives. Project Canoe uses a small ratio staff to youth ratio of 2:4, which ratio allows personal attention and supervision for youth and helps the youth to engage and create relationships.

Primary Responsibilities
• Co-lead 5-25 day wilderness canoe trips, possibly including Leader in Training programs
• Manage canoe trip emergencies and evacuations
• Write appropriate documentation, including youth and guardian letters
• Contribute expertise to staff training
• Assist with base camp maintenance
• Must be comfortable in a collaborative staff working and living structure

Minimum Qualifications
• 2+ seasons of experience working with our youth population or 4+ seasons working with youth
• Bronze Cross (NLS preferred)
• Advanced Wilderness First Aid
• Basic Rescuer CPR (Level C)
• ORCKA Canoe Tripping Level 3 (or equivalent trip leadership experience – i.e. ability to safely plan and co-lead a wilderness canoe trip)

Six weeks of comprehensive training will be provided, including all emergency procedures and specialized topics such as youth mental health, behaviour management, bullying, risk management and low impact camping practices. Staff will also earn their Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certificate.
