LEAF – Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests

LEAF is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and improvement of the urban forest, and offers several programs and services for Toronto and York Region residents.

Through its Backyard Tree Planting Program, LEAF offers native trees and shrubs to property owners at a subsidized cost. Staff assist residents in making educated decisions about the type of tree that suits their property and where it should be planted. Since they’re first planting season in 1996, over 17,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted in backyards throughout the City of Toronto and York Region.

LEAF also offers Presentations and Workshops from educations speakers, which cover a wide range of urban forest issues, and can be customized to meet any group’s needs. LEAF’s Tree Tenders Volunteer Training Sessions is a multi-day course designed for individuals who want to gain tree-related knowledge and skills. Each session provides basic arboriculture training, which include a combination of indoor and outdoor instruction.

LEAF’s Tree Tours provide guided walks through your neighbourhood, for groups of 20 to 50 people, which can incorporate tree identification, tree health, local history and interesting tree stories. You can also order their Urban Forest Community Action Kit, a series of 10 fact sheets available free in electronic format.
