Thirty years on, forum has a different face

The first time the world came to Vancouver to talk cities, in 1976, it was a parade of stars.
Anthropologist Margaret Mead was there; so was maverick city planner Jane Jacobs. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau ditched the formal closed-door conference at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and, famously, walked barefoot to the grassroots alternative conference at Jericho Beach. His then-wife, Margaret Trudeau, carrying a bucket of water, led a parade to the shore to represent global citizens living without clean water. Even Mother Teresa came. She cancelled her flight home to stay for the child and youth meetings at University Hill school.
